In Thomas "Dirkee's" will dated 1757, he mentions his wife Rebeckah, sons, James, NATHANIEL, Andrew, Robert, daughters, Elizabeth Webb, Mary Johnson and Amie Pitcher. Also the children of sons, Thomas, Joseph and Benjamin. He leaves his youngest son, Nathan his great Bible. Son Solomon is thought to have died young and he is not mentioned in this will.
The complete will is printed in the Durkee family newsletter, Summer 1985.
Elizabeth's maiden name was probably Lord, there were more families by that name in the area.
Some records list it as "Ford", but probably because of the handwriting.
Durkee also spelled Durgy, Durgee, Durgey, Durge (etc) in early records.
Much of the information in this "tree" comes from the 3 volume set of "The Durkee Family Genealogy"
When Cromwell invaded Ireland, William's family was murdered and the property confiscated. William was sold into slavery and shipped to Barbados. In 1658 Cromwell died, in 1660 Charles II regained the throne and finally in 1663 freed the Irish and Scot slaves. On November 9, 1663, on the ship Redemtioneer, William Durgee arrived in Ipswich, Mass. He worked for Thomas Bishop. Martha Cross also worked for the same family.

The Durkees in America descend from three sons of Wm and Martha, John, Thomas and William.
Henry is only mentioned in one source and probably died young.
Hannah Cook was evidently married to Thomas Bucland first.
So sometimes her name is listed as Buck, Buckland etc.
Robert was born in Dedham, Suffolk County, England, and christened on June 26 1613. Info from church records.
He came to New England on the Mary and John in 1634.

No reference to the name "Mary" (as Edward's wife) except on daughter Mary Emma (Brown) Johnson's death certificate. Mary Spain Brown died and Edward remarried.
Living next door, in the 1880 census, is Margaret Elizabeth (Brown) Rogers. Married to James Madison Rogers. She must have died before the 1900 census. Their son, (Gideon) Kirk Rogers was a Presbyterian minister in Houston, Tx. He came to Bandera and conducted the funeral for his first cousin, Edward Asa Johnson in Sept. 1968. Kirk Rogers passed away in 1976.
Mary Emma, Cannie and Lillie were all born in Tennessee. Mary Emma was married in Pope Co. Arkansas in 1875 and Cannie (or Carrie) was married in Pope Co. Arkansas in 1877. Lillie was married to a Mr Petrey and then married L E Gibson in Pope Co. She was on the 1900 Pope Co. Ark. census with husband Edward L. Gibson. Asa Johnson wrote letters to his Aunt Lillie in Arkansas, at least until 1950.
According to the death certificate of Mary "Emma" Brown, her father was Ed Brown and mother Mary Spain.
Her obituary shows sisters Mrs. L.E. (Lillie) Gibson and Cannie Purviance as survivors. Also sons V.A., Twiggs, E.A., J.C., H.E. and Idus.
Ancestry.com shows Edward F. Brown as the father of Cannie Brown, Mary's sister. No info on his wife or other children.
1880 Pope County Arkansas census:
Edward E. Brown, age 51, farmer
Sarah L. Brown, age 45, wife
Lillie E. Brown, age 12 - she is the right age for Mary's sister Lillie.
Lerotia (?) age 10
Leonard (?) Female(?) age 8
Lonah E. age 7
Edward E. age 5
Elliott, age 2 Don't know if this is the right family - maybe Mary Spain Brown died and Edward remarried?
Mary Emma, Cannie and Lillie were all born in Tennessee, but Mary Emma was married in Pope Co. Arkansas in 1875 and Cannie (or Carrie) was married in Pope Co. Arkansas in 1877.
