Hyatt Shadrach [Male] b. 4 SEP 1776 North Carolina - d. 1853 North Carolina

Shadrach was about ten years old when his parents moved from the Morganton area of Burke County, NC to Haywood County, one of the very first white families to settle there. Shadrach married Rhoda Hill about 1802 and they had eleven children. He bought land in Haywood (along Richland Creek) and Jackson Counties (Scott's Creek). In 1838, he sold out and went to Cades Cove, TN where he purchased land in 1839. His father-in-law, Green Hill, may have gone with them because he also bought land there in 1839. Hyatt Lane and Hyatt Hill are still place names in the Cove 150 years later and are beautiful locations. Shadrach served as postmaster there for a year or two. Three of his children met their spouses while living there.

Hyatt Edward Gaither [Male] b. 1740 Maryland - d. 6 FEB 1817 North Carolina

A descendant of Sir Charles Hyatt II of England who came to the American Colonies in 1665, Edward Gaither Hyatt came to North Carolina after his father died and his mother remarried. He married Hannah Parker Leatherwood in Maryland or NC and started a family. He joined the patriots and fought the British in the Battle of King's Mountain during the Revolutionary War. Not long after the "Big Pigeon Treaty" had been made with the Cherokee about 1785, Edward left the Morganton area and went even farther west to an area that later became Haywood County. Making friends with the Indians in the area, he selected land near the present town of Waynesville on which to settle, after a brief time living in the Pigeon Valley area.
Only a handful of other white men were venturing there to settle at that time. Edward, his wife Hannah, and six children and their spouses, built homes in the area and settled down to frontier living. He was a very devout man and soon built a small log chapel, probably the first Baptist house of worship for miles around. It was located near the present Maple Grove United Methodist Church.
